Educational seminar on the applications and challenges of semantic data enrichment

Date: 15th September 2023

During the third project meeting in Sofia, the partners from the University of Milano-Bicocca conducted an educational seminar for GATE researchers on Semantic data enrichment: applications and challenges. During the seminar, a semantic approach to the enrichment of tabular and textual data, where the original data are interlinked while enriched was presented. Since the quality of the enriched data must fit for use in the downstream applications, a native human-in-the-loop perspective that enables users to control the outcome of the enrichment and, eventually, improve their quality was described. In this perspective, algorithms for interpreting, annotating, and extracting information from tabular and textual data must be coupled with interactive user interfaces and algorithms to manage the feedback loop. In the seminar, the application of this paradigm to tabular data was explored, including applications to different industry sectors. The seminar included an introduction to basic concepts related to semantics to make it open to a general audience.

4th Data Science International Summer School in Predeal, Romania

Date: 20th July 2023

For the second year, the Bucharest University of Economic Studies, in collaboration with the GATE Institute, organized a Data Science International Summer School in Predeal, Romania, 20 -28 July, 2023. International scientists from prestigious universities and research institutions in the USA, Austria, Slovenia, Norway, the Netherlands, UK, Bulgaria, and Romania delivered sessions on data-related topics including data analytics, machine learning, graph analysis, tome series, etc. The sessions involved both theory and practical exercises. Dr. Wiktor Sowinski-Mydlarz and Dr. Pawel Gasiorowski from GATE Institute and London Metropolitan University presented two sessions on operationalizing machine learning pipelines and deep learning with neural networks. Nikolay Nikolov from SINTEF conducted a session on data enrichment including presentation of use cases and application examples.

InterTwino project and advisory board meetings in Sofia (May 2-4, 2023)

Date: 5th May 2023

The Advisory Board of the project met live for the first time to discuss current challenges, as well as promising research directions and projects. The Advisory board members – Anna Fensel, Ahmet Soylu and Evgeny Kharlamov, are experts in the field of artificial intelligence and data compatibility, as well as digital transformation and innovation. The board members shared their suggestions on perspective research directions within the InterTwino working groups, possibilities for future collaboration and discussed the innovation potential of data spaces and interoperability within and between data spaces.
During the project meeting, a number of workshops covering different topics in the three working groups – smart cities, platform and education, were held. New research directions in the field of semantic interoperability for data spaces, extensions of CityGML model, as well as tools integration for definition of enrichment pipelines were discussed. Planning capacity-building activities were also a part of the agenda.

GATE is organising a research seminar

Date: 8th September 2022

In the framework of its InterTwino project (https://intertwino.gate-ai.eu/) and in collaboration with the DataCloud project (https://datacloudproject.eu/), GATE is organizing a research seminar “A novel paradigm for Big Data pipeline processing over heterogeneous resources”. The event will take place online on 8 September 2022, from 14.00 to 15.30 h.

The seminar will discuss the stages of the lifecycle of Big Data pipelines as well as concrete technologies for supporting them. It will present outcomes of the DataCloud and InterTwino projects and will introduce the upcoming enRichMyData project, which addresses issues related to a subset of Big Data pipelines – data enrichment pipelines.

The lecturers will be Dumitru Roman (PhD), a Senior Research Scientist at SINTEF AS (Norway) and associate professor at the University of Oslo (Norway), and Nikolay Nikolov, a PhD fellow at the University of Oslo and a research scientist in the Smart Data group at SINTEF Digital. Both lecturers are part of the team of the GATE’s InterTwino project.

Data Science International Summer School in Predeal, Romania

Date: July 2022

The Bucharest University of Economic Studies, in collaboration with the GATE Institute at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and the InterTwino and DataCloud projects, organised a Data Science International Summer School in Predeal, Romania, from July 22 to July 31, 2022. Ten guest lecturers – prominent scientists from prestigious universities and research institutions in the USA, UK, Spain, Norway, Bulgaria, and Romania – delivered data-related topics such as data management, machine learning, graph and text analytics, among others. The sessions involved both theory and practical exercises. About 40 participants attended the summer school and received certificates.

Nikolay Nikolov and Titi Roman from SINTEF conducted a session on data enrichment including hands-on learning. Vassil Vassilev and Wiktor Sowinski-Mydlarz from the GATE Institute gave an overview of operationalizing machine learning pipelines and presented some practical examples of continuous leaning. Four GATE researchers participated in the summer school and enjoyed intensive eight days full of great learning experience and potential future work partnerships.

Presentation on semantic data enrichment for data science and AI applications

Date: February 2022

Matteo Palmonari and Flavio De Paoli from University of Milano-Bicocca made an exciting presentation on semantic data enrichment for data science and AI applications on a research seminar at GATE institute. The semantic data enrichment paradigm was introduced and several use cases that illustrate how pervasive this process is in the today Data Science and AI landscape were described. The presentation was followed by a fruitful discussion.
